Here's the second round of impressions for the Spring season! Monday through Wednesday of anime this season seems to be a pretty quiet place, but with some leftovers from last week and some new comers we've got a hefty round of impressions to get to. If you missed any of the impressions from part 1, check them out here! We've had some real gems in the first round, but can the next round of episodes live up to the hype of the season?
Seriously ufotable this is getting to be unfair to other studios. Where is all this money coming from?! Are you beating up other studios and taking their lunch money? Is that what happened to Gunslinger Stratos' animation??? All kidding aside, it's strong start for an amazing series that is sure to go down as a classic. Shirou and Rin's situation is at an all time low, but that only serves to up the tension and add to what's sure to be an entertaining comeback.
Verdict: I'm addicted. This show is like crack.
Cute girls doing cute things is KyoAni's wheelhouse and this episode has it in spades, but unlike K-On it looks like this show will have somewhat of a plot. I can't say that I was a huge fan of the show, but I'm not really the target demographic either. It does what it sets out to do and looks gorgeous as it does it, but the pace is a little slow for me, and the plot seems like it's going to be predictable. If you're looking for a nice relaxing slice of life this season you could certainly do worse than Hibike Euphonium, but I'm so full up on other shows that I'm most likely back burnering this one.
Verdict: Nice, but not nice enough to watch week to week.
This was a super nostalgia trip for me. The series is created by the mangaka behind Inuyasha and it shows, the art style, the humor it all sort of stems from that feel of Inuyasha. This is not a bad thing at all and the protagonist Roukudou is fun enough that I was never bored throughout the episode. It's a nice change that it airs on Wednesdays too, because otherwise I probably wouldn't have thought twice about it. As it stands it's a fun little series that I could see being more and more entertaining as time goes on.
Verdict: Thank goodness I have SOMETHING to watch in this Monday-Wednesday time slot
Everyone's favorite meta samurai is back! Gintama is a fourth wall breaking, shonen jump loving, odd job taking samurai and this new season's episode takes on a wonderful little adventure with a universal clock. With a brilliant aside to start the episode. Seriously that was great. If you love wacky and silly antics this show will not disappoint, it's good to have you back Gintama!
Verdict: Love it!
I've never watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumia before. There. I said it. With that out of the way, I heard that this was a spin off set in an alternate dimension, so I figured I'd have a shot at still figuring out what was going on. It's pretty cute for a slice of life show and the chemistry that the characters have is quite nice. I'm going to give it a few episodes to see if the rapport between members of the Literature club is enough to keep me entertained week in and week out.
Verdict: The jury's still out on this one for me folks!
This show has set a new record for how fast I was put off of an episode. Literally one minute into the episode and I already had my opinion. Unfortunately for me the remaining twenty or so minutes didn't change my opinion and we have a solid contender for the omigod why? series of the season. Just stupid levels of fanservice and weird anatomy, make this episode bad before even considering the terribly half assed story.
Verdict: Needs more than just Plot.
All of the adorable. All of it. Takeo is a gorilla of a boy, much taller and stockier than anyone else his age, he isn't the most popular of kids in his middle school. Though, he is friends with the most attractive guy in school due to their mothers being close. One day he stops a molester on the train and so our unusual story begins! Takeo's a protagonist unlike any other in anime where it's rare to get an unattractive protagonist. He also has a heart of absolute gold, even if he is misunderstood. I sincerely hope that this show doesn't go further too much longer with this miscommunication, and actually goes into their romance. This show has equal measures of aww and laughs and was a total surprise for me. This season really doesn't disappoint!
Super Moe overload. I'm going to be upfront with you guys here. I did not like this episode. I'm all for Moe in small does, even medium doses, but that idol scene fantasy in the first part of the episode went so far overboard that it was above anything I could handle. I'm not saying it was a bad episode by any means, it seems to have a catchy soundtrack and the character design is at least decent, but it just was not for me.
Biggest pleasant surprise of the season so far. I had barely registered this show on my radar prior to giving it a view. It seemed like it had a fun premise on anichart.net when I was looking for what was airing, but that was all I had to go on. It has pretty cool character designs, great comedic timing and a strong willed protagonist that had me completely entertained about five minutes into the episode. Add on top of that super powered battles and you've got me hook line and sinker.
Verdict: Where'd this one come from?!! Love'd it!
Season 2 of the Baby Steps anime, following the tennis exploits of protagonist and note enthusiast Maruo Eichiro. This season doesn't offer any recap or real explanation of what happened last season so it's not friendly to newcomers or fans who forgot what happened last season. I'd suggest watching the last episode of season 1 before getting back into this one. Anyway, it's the same great tennis action, this time set in America! Plus it's nice to see that awesome OP back for more :3
Verdict: More of the same Baby Steps that I loved last season
Well that's it for this round of impressions! Yup, there's plenty of more to come between episodes that haven't released yet, ones I've missed, and short form anime, but that's for another time! What'd you think of any of the shows that have aired so far?
