While TUT has the world of anime covered, I thought it might be fun to set up a weekly spot for TAYers to discuss what other TV shows they're watching. Here's how this will work: I'll pick a TV show that I'm watching and talk about it a bit. Y'all can respond about that show, OR you can just start a thread below about whatever it is you're watching. It's a free country!
So, for the inaugural TV Tuesday I'd like to talk about Gravity Falls. Here we go:
GRAVITY FALLS IS AMAZING AMIRITE?
Yes, yes I am "rite." For those who haven't seen it, Gravity Falls is a show created by Alex Hirsch on the Disney Channel. It's about two siblings, Dipper and Mabel Pines (played by Jason Ritter and Kristen Schaal, respectively). The premise is that they've been sent by their parents to spend the summer with their "Grunkle" (great-uncle) Stan, working at his cheesy tourist attraction The Mystery Shack in the town of Gravity Falls, Oregon. As the title implies, the town might be the real star of the show. In the first episode Dipper finds a mysterious book full of strange symbols and helpful information, and this sets him on his journey to uncover the mysteries of Gravity Falls.
These symbols and larger mysteries get teased at in the show, and as you can probably guess fans are loving them. Tumblrs devoted to uncovering the show's secrets sprang up almost as soon as the first episode aired. At this point the show seems to present a whole, well thought out continuity, and that's the kind of thing that sets nerd hearts aflutter.
But really, mysterious backstories and strange symbols could only take a show so far. Luckily, Gravity Falls has several aces up its sleeve. For starters, there's the extended cast. Grunkle Stan, Soos (in the classic "lovable dimwit" role), and Wendy (Dipper's perpetual crush) round out the primary players. They're all the kind of hilarious, well-rounded (in Soos' case, literally) and well-written characters that remind me of early seasons of the Simpsons. Additionally, the town itself has a deep well of supporting characters... Hilarious supporting characters, I should add. My personal favorite is an unnamed gentleman in a tank top and shorts who usually appears when two characters are fighting, yelling "Get 'em! Get 'em!" Also, this one time he couldn't decide between a puma shirt or a panther shirt. This was one of the funniest things I've seen in my life. You probably had to be there, man...
But really, what makes Gravity Falls so amazing to me is the dynamic between Dipper and Mabel. There's a long established tradition of creating tv drama through sibling rivalry. Bart and Lisa have never particularly liked each other, despite occasionally realizing that they do love each other. Dipper and Mabel, on the other hand, always start from a place of love and support. They couldn't be more different, and yet they've got real affection for each other. It's a remarkably well written relationship (creator Alex Hirsch apparently modeled it after his relationship with his own sister), and it gives the wackier supernatural elements a real dose of heart and humanity.
Well I didn't really plan to blab this much about Gravity Falls, but I've got no regrets! Does anyone know if this show's got any more episodes this season? The last one ("Boyz Crazy") didn't exactly feel like a season-ender, but I don't see any more scheduled...
Talk about whatever TV shows you're watching below; if I'm watching it too I'll probably chime in. And be sure to check out TAY Classic for the smooth, refreshing flavor of TAY, now with half the calories!
