Just to be clear, I’ve ALWAYS used caps-lock for writing “SPEED UP”, so if anything Firaxis stole the idea from me:P

Anyway... welcome to SPEED UP, which is an ongoing experiment of mine. I increase the speed (with that I mean both the tempo and the pitch) of a video game music track by 50%, and see if it still sounds any good.
After years of trying out a lot of tracks, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s a very rare occurrence - but there exist a few tracks that fit the bill! This XCOM 2 combat track is one of these rare ones.

For comparison, here is the combat loop at normal speed:

Both versions are equally-good, as the core composition is strong to begin with. Even so, it’s cool to see that this track, by pure chance, it is also works at 50% increased speed.

This is not the only track I’ve found that works at 50% increased speed either. I’ve created a YouTube list with 14 more tracks. Feel free to check it out if you’re into that kind of stuff. Each video has a link to the normal speed version, so you can compare the two versions.

Between this and the Hero Theme Analysis, I hope everyone had a great-sounding day, and learned a thing or two on how flexible and beautiful music can be.
