Pokemon One a Day: Victreebel
The Flycatcher Pokemon
Today we look at the Pokemon world's take on our real world venus fly trap - the living plant known as Victreebel! For today's illustration the final piece is fleshed out very busy and active markings in a very contained shape and form.
Like with Weepinbell, Victreebel is a very simple and straight forward design. My connection with Victreebel goes back to Pokemon Stadium, for the N64. One way or another, wether my team was assigned one or I selected for I cannot remember for the life of me, Victreebel was on my squad when we went on our way to take down Mewtwo. Victreebel was clutch in that moment when I took down the tyrant genetically ehanced abomination. Other than that we recognize Victreebel as James partner from the anime, whose little quirk was that he was always…chewing? Kissing? Trying to eat James? One of those activities.
My original attempt had stark black lines, and had some fluidity in the piece with sweeping strokes. As I continued to render out the piece, I found that it was lacking in presentation, not to mention the pose and representation was otherwise standard. Thus, I started to scribble like one would when they doodle in a notebook. The piece started to come alive from that form, bringing a new energy to the piece by having a busy texture invigorate a plant, a being that is usually stationary.
I didn't add much to the design, just adding an extra mouth and teeth for the mouth(s) of the Pokemon, to make it a bit more intimidating. As a poison type, I added purples and neon greens to resemble toxicity, and having those colors appear in shadowy areas and in the drool/saliva against the warm yellows and orange and even pink sits really well together, if I may say so.
So that conclude the illustration for today! This line isn't my favorite set of Pokemon, and although they work for what they are, I tried to make them enjoyable for both you and I. That said, enjoy your night and see you tomorrow for the next installment of Pokemon One a Day!
+ Pokemon One a Day is a series illustrated and curated by Bonny John in an effort to represent the the first generation of characters from the world wide phenomenon that is known as Pokemon. The idea is simple - to draw and share one new Pokemon a day (weekends off!) until every Pokemon from the set is completed. This project is an exploration of fine art styles for learning and leisurely purposes.
