Okay TAYites! (TAYans? TAYese?) The Geek Empress needs your help. My bud Drake is currently designing a game which I'm going to be doing the character art for. It's going to be a TRPG and it's going to have amazing writing, because my friend Drake is an amazing writer. Right now he needs some Alpha testers to make sure his engine is functioning properly. Here's the copypasta from his blog for more details:

Before I get to deploying the actual scisorc game (or even the pre-Nasdreks-commissions, 21-character beta), I wanted to test some things. Probably the most important of these issues is that of deployment.


(Note: Attempting to install this on a Windows machine will give a warning that this might be malware because it can't verify the publisher. I'm not about to shell out hundreds of dollars for official Windows licensing just for the purpose of testing a whim, nor will I for the actual product. Ignore any message you see looking like this. If you use 3rd party anti-virus software, you might have to disable it if it tries to stop you from playing.)

(Second Note: Installing this program on a Mac or Linux OS is not recommended.)

This is a link to the setup files for a sample game I wrote. Simply download the zip file to your computer and extract it. Run the setup file in the unzipped folder and it will install what I'm rather charitably referring to as a game. You can uninstall it when you're done with it. (Go to [Control Panel] and then to either [Add or Remove Programs] or [Programs and Features], depending on your version of Windows. If you don't see these options, you may have to switch your control panel to classic mode, view all options, or something like that.)

I cannot stress enough that this is not up to the quality of the actual game. Not even close. Frankly, the thing is pretty simple, sloppy, and downright embarrassing, especially compared to what the for-real scisorc game looks and (eventually) plays like. It's also very short, and so shouldn't take much time away from your busy schedules. How short? Each round is 30 seconds (though you can play as many rounds as you want). The only reason I'm parading it out now is because it gave me a brilliant epiphany for a way to tackle combat in the actual scisorc game in a more engaging way than reading a post-combat spreadsheet that tells you what the game's internal damage calculator did that turn (i.e. the current system). How well this experiment works will determine if and how I'll implement this into the actual game.

When / if you finish, let me know the following things:

1) Were you able to install and run the game without difficulty?

1a) Do you run a Windows operating system?

1b) Were you able to open the link to the project? (You'll need an internet connection to reach the cloud repository I set up.)

1c) Were you able to install the game?

1d) Once installation finished, were you able to run the game?

1e) Did your anti-virus software attempt to delete the game?

2) Were you able to see the display?

2a) Were the instructions big / dark enough to read?

2b) Were you able to see the game's output?

2c) Were you able to see the depleting timer bar?

3) Did the game crash unexpectedly at any point? What were you doing when it crashed? What happened afterwards?

4) If you were able to play, what were your scores?

4a)Were your losses due more to error, or time-out?

(Third Note: Don't feel too bad if your scores are really low. Heck, I can only actually win the game about half the time myself. These statistics are strictly for the purposes of gathering usability data, specifically for determining a reasonable level of aptitude to balance for when / if I decide to incorporate a similar system into my actual game's combat engine. The idea behind this system in the actual game is that the better your fighters are, the easier the minigame gets.)
